Fall in Denver: Foliage & Fall Activities

Oktoberfest in Denver

Fall in Denver brings a mix of changing leaves, cooler temperatures, outdoor festivals, beer events, film screenings, and Halloween attractions. With Colorado’s mountains beginning their seasonal transformation in September and the Denver metro area showing more color later in the season, visitors have several weeks to enjoy fall activities around the city and beyond.

Denver also has an unusual advantage for fall foliage. Five different climate zones are located within roughly a two-hour drive of downtown Denver, creating a long season for fall leaves. At higher elevations, aspens can begin turning gold in mid-September. By October and into mid-November, fall colors move into the foothills and plains around Denver.

The timing varies by location and weather, but northern Colorado mountain areas often peak during September, central mountain areas generally reach their best color during the last week of September, and southern mountain areas often peak during the first week of October.

Fall Events Around Denver

Chatfield Farms Corn Maze & Pumpkin Festival is a classic autumn outing for families. Located at the Denver Botanic Gardens’ Chatfield Farms, the seasonal event features a large corn maze, pumpkin picking, and other activities that make it easy to spend several hours outdoors.

For Halloween entertainment, Elitch Gardens Fright Fest runs on weekends from September 26 through November 1, 2026. The event follows a “fun by day, fright by night” format, combining daytime activities with Halloween-themed entertainment after dark.

Beer lovers can make plans for Oktoberfest – The Denver Wiesn, taking place October 16–18 and October 22–25, 2026. Hosted by the Bavarian Guild, the event brings Bavarian food, beer, music, and traditions to Denver while adding a Colorado setting to the celebration.

Movie fans have another option with the Denver Film Festival, running October 22 through November 1, 2026. The festival is approaching its 49th year and brings a new selection of films, filmmakers, performers, and industry events to venues throughout the city.

The seasonal calendar continues into November with the Denver Christkindlmarket, running November 20 through December 23, 2026, at the Tivoli Quad on the Auraria Campus. The German-style holiday market features lights, food, music, and gifts and offers an early start to Denver’s holiday season.

For visitors who would rather create their own itinerary, the Denver Beer Trail is a self-guided tour developed by VISIT DENVER. It features nearly 40 craft breweries across some of the city’s best-known neighborhoods. Stops can include historic Wynkoop Brewing Company, Colorado’s first brewpub, or Denver ChopHouse & Brewery near Coors Field.

Where to Find Denver Fall Colors

You don’t necessarily have to leave Denver to see fall foliage. Washington Park offers a 2.6-mile gravel trail surrounded by mature trees, along with two lakes and plenty of open space. It is an easy place to add a walk among fall leaves to a day in the city.

Denver City Park is another local option. Located near the Denver Zoo and Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the park’s mature trees and broad lawns provide plenty of opportunities to see autumn colors without heading into the mountains.

For visitors who want a longer outing, the Cherry Creek Bike Trail and South Platte River Trail provide more extensive opportunities to see fall foliage. The Cherry Creek trail stretches for more than eight miles, while the South Platte River Trail extends for roughly 45 miles. Their tree-lined sections provide changing scenery through different parts of the Denver area.

Of course, some of Colorado’s most recognizable fall colors can be found at higher elevations. A drive into the foothills or mountains can put travelers closer to golden aspen groves during the peak season. Because elevation has such a significant effect on timing, checking current foliage reports before planning a mountain excursion is worthwhile.
